Medicaid Enrollment by Maintenance Assistance Status, 2003 - 2012

Description: The number of people enrolled in Medicaid has increased since 2003, with large growth in 2008 and again in 2009 and 2010. The largest categories for any given year are poverty and cash assistance – together constituting approximately 65-70% of enrollees; this proportion has remained stable over time. The proportion of enrollees eligible due to being medically needy decreased slightly from 6.2% in 2003 to 5.1% in 2012; the proportion with 1115 waivers has decreased from 10.6% in 2003 to 6.8% in 2012.

Medicaid Enrollment, 2012 by Racial Group

Description: The White Non-Hispanic racial group is the largest racial category (39.3% of enrollees), followed by Hispanic (19.9%) and Black (21%). 4.2% of enrollees in 2012 were Asian or Pacific Islander, 1.2% were American Indian or Alaska Native, and 14.4% were more than one race, another race, or unknown racial category.

Technical Notes: Race classification changed in 2000 to allow for selection of more than one race. For this graphic, some race categories were combined due to small numbers: the Asian and Pacific Islander groups are combined; the More than one race categories and unknown race are included in the "Other/Unknown" group.
